Leicester miss out on a precious win at Goodison

Everton 2:2 Leicester City

2014-15 everton away c

A late equaliser for Everton denied City two vital points at Goodison on Sunday afternoon…

Nigel Pearson made one change with Huth back in for Wasilewski – the same line-up as at Arsenal.
Although Schlupp forced an early save from Howard and Besic tested Schwarzer with a long-range effort it was a cagey an fairly uneventful opening half hour.
Having been set up nicely by Coleman, Lukaku then skied his shot well over; while Kramarić, always willing to have a crack, sent a curling shot just over Howard’s bar.
Lukaku then saw his shot blocked by Morgan and Barkley seized on the loose ball but fired way off target.
The last chance of the half fell to City but Schlupp became the latest player to give their shot too much altitude.

City started the second half brightly, with Howard saving from James and Mahrez going close from a corner, and Roberto Martinez made a double substitution.
A minute later, the Toffees took the lead. Naismith deceiving Schwarzer with an oddly struck shot that found its way through a crowded penalty area.
It was now Pearson’s turn to make a double change for City, with Nugent and Vardy coming on for Schlupp and Mahrez, and the effect was the same – an immediate goal. Vardy went charging down the right and sent over a low cross. Howard got in a tangle with a defender at the near post and the ball was presented to Nugent for a tap-in from three yards.
Lukaku let City off the hook with another off-target effort from a good position, and the visitors then took the lead with 20 minutes remaining.
After a Simpson cross was diverted to Vardy he set up Cambiasso for a neat finish that had the away section celebrating wildly.

A win would have left City just 2 points from safety, and although they held out until the 88th minute, Lukaku finally managed to get an effort on target.  Atsu delivered a pinpoint cross from the left and Lukaku’s diving header beat Schwarzer, possibly via Upson’s head.

The gap to safety was instantly doubled to four points and although City desperately sought a late winner they had to be content with a point.
Although we might have settled for that before the game, it felt like a defeat.

Everton: Howard, Baines, Jagielka, Lukaku, Naismith (Miralles 85), McCarthy, Besic (Atsu 55), Barkley (Gibson 55), Coleman, Lennon, Stones. Subs Not Used: Robles, Kone, Garbutt, Alcaraz.

Leicester dumped out of the FA Cup at Villa

Aston Villa 2:1 Leicester City

2014-15 villa cup away a

City’s bowed out of the FA Cup at Villa Park on Sunday with a poor performance in front of 6,500 travelling fans…

Nigel Pearson made one change to the side that played at Arsenal, with Wasilewski in for the cup-tied Huth, so a five-man defence lined up against a very goal-shy Villa side.
Villa got off to a better start, with new boss Tim Sherwood sat in the stands and featuring regularly on the big screens, though Weimann sent their best chance sailing over the bar.
City then went close from a James corner, Wasilewski’s glancing header had Given beaten but brushed the right hand post.
In a half of few chances City’s next came on the half hour when a Cambiasso dummy made space for James to fire in a vicious shot that Given did very well to get his fingertips to, sending the ball inches wide.
Benteke got the ball into City’s net just before the break but Villa celebrations were halted by an offside flag and the sides went in goalless after a half that wouldn’t have gripped the nation.

Attacking the Holte End, and having had their first half-time team talk from Sherwood, Villa looked more likely to open the scoring, especially as City were having terrible trouble retaining possession. Delph sent a header over the bar and then Schwarzer smothered a Benteke effort.
Delph then sent a shot from a free-kick wide.

Nigel Pearson made a change on 65 minutes, bringing Ulloa on for Wasilewski, but just three minutes later Villa took the lead.
Bacuna cut in from the left and delivered a fine shot beyond Schwarzer and into the far corner to break the deadlock and delight the home fans.
It could have been 2-0 soon afterwards, but Upson put in a fine last-ditch challenge to prevent Benteke from adding to the scoreline.
City best chance of a reply came when an Ulloa effort was saved by Given, who then blocked Kramarić’s follow-up. A few attacks were mounted to no great effect as City by now looked very ponderous and disjointed.
Villa added a second as the clock reached 90. Morgan failed to cut out the ball over the top and substitute Sinclair sealed the home side’s place in the quarter-finals after a Schwarzer fumble.

Somewhat perversely, as soon as the game was beyond them City found the net at last. Kramarić sent an outstanding header past Given from a Schlupp cross to give City’s huge following something to cheer, but it was too late to make a difference.

The final whistle was heralded with chants of: “What a load of rubbish!” from an extremely disenchanted away crowd.
Being able to ‘concentrate on the league’ won’t fill anyone with any joy…

Villa: Given, Hutton, Cissokho, Clark, Vlaar, Bacuna (Sinclair 77), Cleverley, Westwood, Delph, Weimann (Grealish 83), Benteke. Subs Not Used: Guzan, Okore, Cole, Sanchez, Lowton, Grealish.
Leicester: Schwarzer, Simpson, Wasilewski (Ulloa 65), Morgan, Upson, Konchesky, Mahrez, Cambiasso, James, Schlupp, Kramarić. Subs Not Used: Hammond, Vardy, King, Albrighton, Hamer, Moore.

Plaudits, but no points, for Leicester at the Emirates

Arsenal 2:1 Leicester City

2014-15 arsenal away

A spirited second half performance was not enough to prevent a 2-1 defeat for City at the Emirates on Tuesday night…

Nigel Pearson made three changes to his starting XI with Huth and Upson making their debuts alongside Morgan in a three-man central defence, and Kramarić making his first full league appearance; Wasilewski, Ulloa and Nugent making way.
City adopted an up and at ’em approach from the start in a fixture they hadn’t won since the days of Jimmy Bloomfield.
Mahrez saw his shot deflected wide, and then James’ half-volley was blocked by Bellerin.  Mahrez then went agonisingly close when his shot went through Ospina’s legs but just wide of the far post.
Arsenal then began to gain some ground and Walcott should have put the Gunners ahead when he broke clear on goal but Schwarzer pulled off a fine block.
Schwarzer then produced another save to deny Ozil but Arsenal took a 27th minute lead from the corner. From Ozil’s flag-kick Koscielny left Morgan standing as he raced to the near post for a neat finish.
Although City continued to press forward they wen tin at the break 2-0 down. Ozil’s 25-yard effort was parried by Schwarzer, but only into the path of Walcott, who fired the ball home.

Just before the hour Upson had to limp out of the action, replaced by Wasilewski, and City struck back a couple of minutes later.
After some great battling from Cambiasso on the right, the ball was worked out to Kramarić 18 yards out, who arrowed home his first goal for City.
City were the better side at this stage, but Mahrez sent a curling effort narrowly off target and then Kramarić elected to try and lob Ospina when clean through but delivered the ball straight into the keeper’s grasp.
With Ulloa and Nugent on for Morgan and Schlupp City desperately sought an equaliser, but they were contained by Arsenal’s defence and ended up with nothing to show for their considerable efforts.

The gap to safety extended to 5 points with a tough looking schedule coming up. Hopefully the FA Cup will offer some cheer on Sunday.

Arsenal: Ospina, Bellerin, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Coquelin, Rosicky, Walcott (Ramsey 73 (Flamini 85)), Cazorla, Ozil, Sanchez (Giroud 67). Subs Not Used: Szczesny, Gibbs, Gabriel, Welbeck.
Leicester: Schwarzer, Simpson, Huth, Morgan (Ulloa 80), Upson (Wasilewski 59), Konchesky, Mahrez, Cambiasso, James, Schlupp (Nugent 85), Kramarić. Subs Not Used: Drinkwater, King, Albrighton, Hamer.

Leicester’s revival halted by Stoke

Leicester City 0:1 Stoke City

2014-15 stoke home b

City suffered their first defeat since Boxing Day when one moment of class in a dour spectacle from Bojan won the game for Stoke at the KPS on Saturday…
Nigel Pearson made four changes to his side with Drinkwater, King, Schlupp and Vardy in for Hammond, James, Albrighton and Ulloa.
With neither Ulloa or new signing Kramarić starting the game this made for the most expensive bench in City’s history.
Though no doubt Ghana would be pleased to hear about Schlupp’s recovery.
A few half chances were created by Schlupp and Knockaert’s early probing, but City’s first clear cut effort didn’t arrive until the 28 minute when  the two combined well but Knockaert sent his effort from close in straight at Begovic. Soon after that Vardy teed up Nugent, but his cleverly taken effort flew inches over the crossbar from the edge of the area.
Hamer hadn’t had much to do at the other end, making a regulation save from Arnautovic’s long-range free-kick after Bojan had been flattened  by Wasilewski.
Wollscheid sent a header narrowly wide from a corner, before Vardy saw the last chance of the half saved by Bergovic, and the ref blew the  whistle on a half that saw more perspiration than inspiration.

2014-15 stoke home c

If Leicester had just edged the first half, the second saw Stoke gradually taking control of the game.
Arnautovic found the side-netting when he should have scored, before Wilson attempted a long-range effort that missed the target.
Hamer then produced a fantastic reaction save to deny N’Zonzi’s volleyed effort from inside the area, but the visitors soon went ahead.
In the 63rd minute a Walters ball found Bojan in the area with his back to goal. He had the time and space to turn a fire a precise shot beyond Hamer’s reach before racing off to celebrate in front of a delighted away corner.

2014-15 stoke home a

Pearson immediately brought on Kramarić for Vardy. With his first meaningful touch he made space for himself and sent in a shot, but it didn’t test Begovic.
Further changes were made with twenty minutes to go, with Ulloa and Lawrence replacing Nugent and Schlupp, but City came up against a red and white striped wall. Knockaert came closest getting onto the end of a Lawrence cross but he was denied by Begovic; while at the other end Crouch went very close with a speculative 40 yard lob.

City could find no way through and this was a big set-back to their fragile revival, though results elsewhere meant that 17th place is still only one win away.

Leicester: Hamer, Simpson, Morgan, Wasilewski, Konchesky, Knockaert, Drinkwater, King, Schlupp (Lawrence 71), Nugent (Ulloa 71), Vardy (Kramarić 65). Subs Not Used: Schwarzer, De Laet, Albrighton, Moore.
Stoke: Begovic, Bardsley, Wilson, Wollscheid, Muniesa, Whelan, N’Zonzi, Arnautovic (Crouch 81), Bojan, Moses (Cameron 85), Walters. Subs Not Used: Butland, Huth, Ireland, Adam, Sidwell.

Leicester battle to victory over Villa

Leicester City 1:0 Aston Villa

2014-15 villa home c

City’s revival continued with a 1-0 win over Aston Villa at the KPS on Saturday, with Paul Konchesky taking one of many chances on the stroke of half-time…

Nigel Pearson made four changes to his side with Wasilewski, Simpson, Albrighton and Hammond in for De Laet, Moore, Cambiasso and Lawrence and they pressed forward from the start.
Ulloa set up Knockaert for an angled shot that was deflected, and then a great chance was wasted when Albrighton charged down the left and sent a pinpoint ball across goal only for Nugent to push it wide of the far post.
Benteke was always a threat and had the ball in the net after 20 minutes, but he was clearly offside.
In the 27th minute good work from Knockaert set up Nugent for another chance but he headed wide from close in.
A rare break for Villa then saw Agbonlahor muscle his way though the defence, only to send his shot sailing into the Kop.
Three minutes before the break Nugent got closer to a goal with a volley that struck the crossbar, before Ulloa headed the rebound over.
However, after a hugely frustrating first half City then took the lead seconds before the half-time whistle.
An Ulloa ball into the area was nodded out by Hutton, but Konchesky seized on the chance and sent a well-directed half-volley in off the left-hand post.

2014-15 villa home a

Villa keeper Guzan was a busy man after the break. Albrighton’s fine cross from the right found James steaming in for a diving header, but Guzan pulled off a remarkable save. He then had to come racing out of his area to head clear as Ulloa threatened; before getting a hand to a fizzing Albrighton shot.
The lively Knockaert then penetrated the Villa defence down the right and set up Ulloa, but as he lined up his shot from 15 yards he was flattened from behind by Clark. It looked like an obvious penalty, but referee Michael Oliver didn’t agree,  much to the disgust of the home crowd.
City looked tired at this stage and Okore and Cleverley both sent efforts off target for the visitors as they gained territory.
A flurry of substitutions followed with Vardy on for Ulloa, Lawrence for Albrighton and King for Hammond.
Nugent set up Lawrence with a good opportunity but he lifted it over the bar, while at the other end Cissokho was equally wasteful from a good position.

2014-15 villa home b

Tempers were beginning to fray as the game entered four minutes of time added on and it all blew up in the centre-circle with virtually every player involved in a scrum.
James had slid into a challenge on Okore with a foot raised, connecting with his shin, and Clark had then flattened him. After the argy-bargy died down both were red carded and were heading for the tunnel where the stormy scenes spread to both dug-outs.
City kept their concentration to defend a corner, and when Benteke headed a chance over, a precious three points had been gained to extend the unbeaten run and stay close behind the other relegation candidates.

It should have been a more comfortable afternoon for City with half a dozen clear chances, but  Andrej Kramaric, sat up in the West Stand for this game, could be the cure for that.

Leicester: Hamer, Konchesky, Morgan, Hammond (King 75), James, Albrighton (Lawrence 71), Simpson, Ulloa (Vardy 71), Knockaert, Wasilewski, Nugent. Subs Not Used: De Laet, Moore, Schwarzer, Wood.
Villa: Guzan, Okore, Clark, Cleverley, Agbonlahor, Cole (Weimann 72), Westwood, Benteke, Hutton, Cissokho (N’Zogbia 89), Sanchez (Richardson 76). Subs Not Used: Baker, Bacuna, Given, Lowton.

Referee: M Oliver. Attendance: 31, 728.

Leicester end 2014 with a long-awaited win at Hull

Hull City 0:1 Leicester City

2014-15 hull away

A Riyad Mahrez goal was enough to gain City their first victory since September against Hull at the KC Stadium on Sunday…

Nigel Pearson made two changes to his side, Cambiasso and James returning to the midfield in place of King and Drinkwater, for a basement battle that Hull boss Steve Bruce claimed was “bigger than the FA Cup final.”
Hull created the chances in a busy opening spell for Hamer who saved efforts from Aluko, Brady and Ramirez.
The lively Schlupp then had the ball in the net after winning a tussle with Livermore, but the ref ruled that he had impeded the defender.
However, just after the half hour McGregor was picking the ball out of his net again as City took the lead.
Nugent fed the ball to Mahrez  who lined up a precise left-footed curler beyond the reach of the keeper and just inside the left hand post. This was lifeline for City, and the first task was to reach half-time with the lead. Mahrez forced a good save from McGregor before Elmohamady scooped the ball over from close in when it looked easier to score.
So City reached half-time with their precious lead intact.
Bruce brought  Jelavic on for Ramirez for the second half, and it wasn’t long before City made their own change up front, with Wood replacing Ulloa. The New Zealander soon bore down upon goal, but was denied by a Davies challenge.
Although Wood then went close with another effort Hull were beginning to apply some pressure and Pearson switched things round with 20 minutes remaining: Cambiasso and Mahrez coming off for De Laet and Drinkwater.
As City conceded ground to a home side desperately seeking an equaliser it made for a horribly nervy end to the game.
Firstly Livermore struck the right hand upright with a shot, before Morgan blocked his effort from the rebound.
Then it was hearts in mouths again as Hernandez headed against the same post before the ball was scrambled clear.
City were then reduced to ten men when Konchesky clashed with Elmohamady when on a yellow, but matters were evened up soon afterwards when Quinn ended a promising break involving Wood and Nugent with his hand and was dismissed for preventing a goalscoring opportunity.
City held fast during 5 minutes of time added on and the final whistle heralded their first victory since September.

While no one could claim that City aren’t still in serious trouble it was, at least, a first step in the right direction…

Hull: McGregor, Rosenior, Bruce, Davies, Meyler (Ince 62), Brady, Livermore, Aluko (Hernandez, 62), Ramirez (Jelavic 46), Elmohamady, Quinn. Subs Not Used: Harper, Figueroa, Maguire, Sagbo.
Leicester: Hamer, Simpson, Wasilewski Morgan, Konchesky, Cambiasso (Drinkwater 71), James, Mahrez (De Laet 71), Nugent, Schlupp, Ulloa (Wood 55). Subs Not Used: Hammond, Moore, Knockaert, Smith.

Leicester defeated by Champions

Leicester City 0:1 Manchester City

Leicester City v Man City, Barclays Premier, 13 December, 2014

Leicester put in a decent performance against Champions Manchester City on Saturday, but yet another defeat left an air of resignation hanging over the KPS…Nigel Pearson made four changes to his starting line-up with Hamer, Morgan, Drinkwater and King in for Schmeichel, Moore, James and Ulloa.
Manuel Pellegrini had to change his plans when Dzeko injured himself during the pre-match warm-up.
Leicester started brightly with a couple of explosive runs from Vardy – one saw his cross for Schlupp cut out by Kompany;  and then he burst into the Man City penalty area though Mangala did enough to ensure he fired wide of the right hand post.
Cambiasso then missed the target after an error from Mangala before the visitor’s defence settled in.
After a fierce Toure shot was blocked by  Simpson, Leicester were inches away from taking the lead when a long range free-kick from Cambiasso whistled past the right hand post with Hart beaten.
Hamer’s first serious action came after half an hour  when he came off his line well to get a fist to a Silva free-kick. It fell for Pozo 20 yards out but Hamer had recovered his ground to comfortably field his first time shot.
Hamer then got down well to parry a low Toure effort, but could do nothing about the Champions opening goal five minutes before the break.
Leicester City v Man City, Barclays Premier, 13 December, 2014As Man City broke upfield, Nasri crossed for Lampard, who was completely unmarked in the middle and only had to place the ball past Hamer for the lead.
After all the effort of the first half, a defensive mistake had cost Leicester dear again.
The second half was broken up by endless free-kicks with the ref reluctant to allow any contact.
Silva missed the target from a decent chance, while up the other end a Mangala challenge on Vardy brought penalty appeals more in hope than expectation.
Ulloa, Powell and Knockaert were all introduced into the action, but Man City were content to sit on their lead and attack on the break.
Ulloa managed a shot on the turn, and Knockaert fired a free-kick was into the wall, but Hart had very little to do.
Leicester City v Man City, Barclays Premier, 13 December, 2014Ulloa sent an effort over the bar after a Morgan nod down the game was up.

Leicester were in no way embarrassed by their illustrious opponents, but another poor piece of defending ensured that they got nothing for their efforts and they remain rooted to the bottom of the Premier League.
Director of Football Terry Robinson did not survive the weekend, leaving the club on Sunday evening. We await further developments, though it is difficult to see any course of action that could preserve our long-awaited and hard fought for place in the top flight.

Leicester: Hamer, Konchesky, Drinkwater (Knockaert 79), Morgan, Vardy (Powell 72), King, Schlupp (Ulloa 64), Simpson, Cambiasso, Mahrez, Wasilewski. Subs Not Used: Hammond, James, Moore, Smith.
Man City: Hart, Sagna, Kompany (Demichelis 77), Fernando, Nasri, Lampard (Milner 60), Mangala, Silva, Clichy, Toure, Pozo (Navas 73) . Subs Not Used: Kolarov, Caballero, Fernandinho.

Leicester’s agony continues with defeat at Villa

Aston Villa 2:1 Leicester City

Aston Villa v Leicester City, Barclays Premiership, 07 Dec 2014

City surrendered a lead for the third game running, losing 2-1 at Villa on Sunday evening…
Nigel Pearson made two changes to his side, with Simpson in for De Laet, and Moore replacing the suspended Morgan, with Schmeichel made skipper.
The first chance fell to City when Vardy found Ulloa in the middle, and the Argentinian teed up James, who fired well over.
Although Benteke went close at the other end, it was City who took a 13th minute lead.
A low shot from Mahrez was mishandled by Guzan, and Ulloa was in the right place at the right time for an easy tap-in at the Holte End.
Sadly, this lead lasted only five minutes as a Westwood free-kick was headed beyond Schmeichel by an unmarked Clark.
Mahrez then got himself into a good position, but shot straight at Guzan.
Agbonlahor had a shot blocked by Simpson and Benteke was denied by Moore as the game turned into something of a stalemate up to the break.
Westwood was stretchered off after a challenge from Vardy, and Ulloa picked up an injury that would end his game at the break.

Aston Villa v Leicester City, Barclays Premiership, 07 Dec 2014

Nugent came on for the second half and had an early chance, but couldn’t find the target.
Benteke then raced through in a one-on-one with Schmeichel who advanced swiftly enough to rush the Belgian into a hurried shot that went narrowly wide.  Soon after this Schmeichel reacted very well to save an Agbonlahor effort from close in.
Wood came on for Vardy in the 66th minute, and set up a chance for Nugent, whose goalbound effort was saved by Guzan.
But it was the home side who took the lead in the 71st minute. City were somewhat embarrassed for pace down the left, and Benteke crossed to the far post where Hutton, completely unmarked, had all the time in the world to place his shot past the exposed Schmeichel.
Things got worse for Leicester with ten minutes remaining when Konchesky was shown a red card after a clash with Hutton, who had appeared to be the main offender but only got a yellow.

Aston Villa v Leicester City, Barclays Premiership, 07 Dec 2014
City kept at their task, but Villa packed their defence and there were only half chances for Wood and Cambiasso.

City remain bottom, with no wins from the last ten games and are now in crisis…

Villa: Guzan, Okore, Clark, Cleverley (Grealish 62), Agbonlahor, Westwood (Richardson 44), Benteke, Hutton, Cissokho, Sanchez, N’Zogbia (Bacuna 76). Subs Not Used: Given, Herd, Lowton, Robinson.
Leicester: Schmeichel, Konchesky, James, Vardy (Wood 66), Schlupp (Albrighton 78), Simpson, Moore, Cambiasso, Ulloa (Nugent 46), Mahrez, Wasilewski. Subs Not Used: Hamer, Drinkwater, King, Powell.

Leicester go bottom after defeat at QPR

Queens Park Rangers 3:2 Leicester City
2014-15 qpr away
City failed to build on an early lead at Loftus Road on Saturday, eventually losing 3-2 to QPR and dropping to the bottom of the Premier League…
Nigel Pearson made no changes to the side that drew with Sunderland and they got off to a flying start, taking a 4th minute lead.
City broke downfield with Schlupp feeding Ulloa who set up Cambiasso, for a precise finish that beat Green inches inside the right hand post.
At the other end a Kranjcar free-kick was deflected narrowly over the bar and there was a scramble in the City area from the resulting corner, but a red shirt eventually managed to clear the danger.
Soon after this Vardy went haring down the right and cut a ball back to Mahrez but in his attempt to beat Green he sent his glancing effort beyond the far post from six yards out.
QPR went close after Kranjcar set up Henry up, bu the delayed his shot long enough for De Laet to come in with a timely tackle.
City held out until the 37th minute, when disaster struck. A penetrating ball from Kranjcar sent Caulker in down the left and his low cross was bundled past Schmeichel by the sliding figure of Morgan as he tried to stop the ball reaching Austin.
City immediately had a great chance to restore the lead as Vardy’s pace saw him one-on-one against Green, but he fired his shot straight at the keeper.
Worse was to come seconds before the half-time whistle. Neither keeper nor defence dealt with a curling cross from Barton. Austin’s header was blocked by Schmeichel, but Fer was on hand to net the rebound from 6 yards.City pushed forward early in the second half and Mahrez forced Green into a save before collecting the rebound and crossing for Vardy to send a looping header onto the crossbar.
Austin then went close with a fierce shot that Schmeichel got down to well.
In the 67th minute City delighted their 1,800 followers with an equaliser. Substitute Albrighton saw his shot blocked by Caulker, but Schlupp latched onto the rebound and lashed home a 22 yarder through a crowded penalty area.
City almost regained the lead when a good attacking spell led to a goal-mouth scramble. The ball fell to Moore after Green saved a Cambiasso shot but he missed his chance to make amends for his own goal, snatching his effort over the bar.
Rangers struck the decisive blow in the 72nd minute after a Barton corner from the right led to another almighty goalmouth scramble. Although substitute Nugent managed to block one shot on the line, Austin was on hand to head into the roof of the net from close in.
City’s best chance to get anything from the game came deep into injury time, but James shot on the turn cleared the bar by inches.
This defeat saw City drop down to bottom place, and the most optimistic fan must now realise that the club’s prospects of Premier League survival are now in severe doubt.

Leicester tame Lions and go top…

Leicester City 3:0 Millwall

1314 millwall home

City’s comfortable 3-0 win over Millwall saw them move to the top of the Championship table on Saturday afternoon…

Nigel Pearson gave Miquel his full debut at centre-half while Wasilewski (followed by a coachload of Anderlecht fans) was moved to right back. James and Knockaert replaced King and Hammond in midfield.
In a game that City were to dominate they took a 12th minute lead, when Drinkwater’s chip found Dyer in on the left and he fired home despite Forde’s best efforts
Time and again City allowed Millwall forward and then hit them on the break, Dyer and Knockaert both going close after lightning moves upfield.
As the chances mounted Nugent had a shot blocked by Robinson and then Forde did well to parry a Knockaert effort.

City sealed the game soon after the break.
In the 52nd minute Vardy latched onto a superb throw out from Schmeichel and charged up field evading the attentions of two defenders before slotting the ball through Forde’s legs for a brilliant goal.
With the crowd still buzzing from that effort Vardy added a third goal three minutes later. Alert to a poor Mason back-pass he nipped in to steal the ball, round the keeper and find the net from an acute angle.
After that, with Millwall rarely threatening, it was a case of seeing if City could find a fourth goal, but they couldn’t quite, despite totalling 30 attempts on the Lions’ goal.
It didn’t really matter however, with defeats for Burnley and QPR seeing City go three points clear at the top.
All that remained was for Wasilewski to be carried shoulder high by his Belgian fan club…
