City Taste the Real Thing

City narrowly lost out in their glamour friendly against Real Madrid at the King Power Stadium on Saturday evening…

A full house attended the re-badged King Power Stadium’s initial fixture against Spanish giants Real Madrid and a new look City gave a good account of themselves, narrowly losing 2-1.

For the home fans this was a first chance to see Schmeichel, Peltier, Mills, Konchesky, Danns and Nugent in the starting line-up and City enjoyed a decent start against Jose Mourinho’s Galacticos.
Benzema had the first chance of the game, going close with an effort, but Danns also narrowly missed the target at the other end.
Schmeichel then spread himself well (bringing inevitable comparisions with his Dad) to deny Coentrao in a one-on-one and Bamba was immense in defnece, dealing with the likes of Kaka with a flourish.
Nugent found the side-netting towards half-time but by now Madrid had found their rhythm and City were struggling to get hold of the ball.
Big signing Mills then injured himself in a collision with keeper Adan as he tried to get his head to a Gallagher free-kick.

Still suffering the effects of his head injury Mills then slipped up to allow Benzema in down the left, the Frenchman squaring for Coentrao to open the scoring. Mills was immediately swapped for St Ledger.
Half time saw a change of kit for City, now wearing Real Madrid style all-white, while King and Johnson were introduced to the action.
Bamba had an early chance to equalise but sent his firm downward header straight at new keeper Casillas, from a Danns corner.
Ronaldo had also come on at half-time and was now pulling the strings for Madrid, but his every touch was booed and the crowd were delighted when he sent a shot high, wide and not too handsome.
The vistors made it 2-0 on the hour when some devastating quick passing set up Marcelo from close in. Although his shot hit the post Benzema was well placed to net the rebound.

The introduction of five City substitutes saw the game hit a barren patch, until City got an 89th minute goal through Dyer. It was too late for a serious attempt at an equaliser, but gave a record crowd something to cheer.
Bring on the Coventry…!

Striker Target Revealed

Sven Goran Eriksson gave some insight into his team building plans telling the Mercury: Eriksson said: “We want two players for every position and we have that with defenders and midfielders now…”

He also hinted that City are close to bringing in another striker, with sources in South Wales claiming that big wages are to be offered to Middlesbrough’s Leroy Lita to divert him from a move to Swansea.
The Congolese born 26 year old played for Bristol City and Reading before moving to the Riverside in 2009.
He has maintained a decent scoring rate at all his clubs, including 7 in 16 games while on loan at Norwich City.

Sven Offers Johnson a Lifeline

Sven Goran Eriksson is keen to bring Manchester City’s forgotten man Michael Johnson to Leicester…

The 23 year old midfielder has suffered two injury plagued seasons at Manchester City and despite interest from Wolves and Leeds it seems that he is on the verge of a signing a season-long loan deal with Leicester.
Sven was Man City boss when Johnson made his breakthrough into the first team in 2006, but he hasn’t made an appearance since 2009.

John Pantsil Signs for City

JohnPantsil yesterday became the eighth player to join City this summer

John was released by Fulham at the end of last season and City have been linked with the Ghanain international for several weeks now. John is an experienced right back who will fill the role that many City fans were hoping would be filled by Kyle Naughton who joined Norwich yesterday. Pantsil has signed a three year contract and would appear to be the final piece in the defensive jigsaw for Sven Goran Eriksson. Pantsil is making all of the right noises at this stage and having been suitably impressed with the set up at Leicester has described this move as “The biggest challenge of my career”.

Meanwhile City are still chasing Nicky Maynard who is also considering an improved offer from Bristol City who are desperate not to lose their highly valued striker. And on the subject of strikers, it now looks as if City will not be pursuing Wayne Routledge any further.

City Win Silverware in Sweden

City have a trophy in the cabinet already and there is news of some comings and goings and another fixture change!

Leicester City have completed the Swedish leg of their pre-season programme with a resounding 4-1 win over Vasalunds IF but the most remarkable news was not that City had won, but that Steve Howard scored all four goals. This follows a 1-1 draw with Real Mallorca and a 3-1 win over IK Sirius, all part of the Stockholm Football Trophy tournament which City have won and whilst it is not an achievement thatwill live long in the memory it is nonetheless good to be winning something.

City now move on to further friendlies against Bursaspor and Real Madrid before the serious stuff starts on August 6th.

Meanwhile City bade farewell today to Robbie Neilson who was brought to the club by Nigel Pearson two seasons ago and never truly settled in to the first team and was never a fans favourite following some inconsistent performances. His contract has been cancelled by the club in a mutually beneficial arrangement. The word is that he is having a trial at Notts County. Rumours of players still waiting to join the club are ten-a-penny at the moment but the names of Nicky Maynard and Wayne Routledge are still high on the list and there were even rumours over the weekend of a fresh bid for Yakubu. It seems the signing of Paul Konchesky from Liverpool last week has generated a stinging rebuke from Tsepo Masilela’s agent, Mike Makaab, who has accused Leicester City of behaving poorly towards his client who was being targeted by City for the left-back role until Konchesky became available at the right price. The South African international, Masilela, was being lined up for a move from Maccabi Haifa and clearly expected it to happen.

City have announced yet another fixture change today; the clash with Leeds at Filbert Way originally scheduled for Saturday November 5th has been moved to Sunday 6th November at 3pm. This is due to Leicester Tigers playing London Irish at Welford Road on 5th November and, as this fixture is going to be screened on television, City have to reschedule.

Konchesky Joins City in Sweden

Liverpool left-back Paul Konchesky has flown out to join City’s Swedish tour and is expected to complete a move from Anfield to Leicester soon…

The former West Ham and Fulham player would be rejoining Sven Goran Eriksson, the man who gave him his two full England caps in 2003 and 2005.
The 30 year old Konchesky signed a four year contract with Liverpool a year ago, but things didn’t work out for him at Anfield and he ended up playing 15 games on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Barking-born Konchesky was at Charton for 8 years before signing for West Ham in 2005 and would solve a left-back position which has been a problem for City over the years.
