Leicester back to winnings ways against Ipswich

Leicester City 3:0 Ipswich Town

Leicester City v Ipswich Town, Sky Bet Championship, 22 February 2014,

City underlined their promotion credentials with a routine 3-0 win over Ipswich at the KPS on Saturday…

City had one change from the Forest game as Schlupp replaced the suspended Konchesky, and they went for it right from the start with the pace of Dyer and Vardy causing problems for Ipswich.
Morgan tested Gerken with a header but then, against the run of play,  Skuse robbed James before firing in a shot that went narrowly wide.
But City didn’t have to wait long for the lead, which came in the 19th minute when Vardy seized on a sloppy Tabb backpass, rounded Gerken, and netted from a seemingly impossible angle.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0 as Nugent took his tally against Ipswich to 14 in 13 games.
A good run and cross from  De Laet  on the right was blocked by Berra. As the visitors’ defence appeared to relax for a second, De Laet instantly squared the rebound across the six yard area for Nugent to tap in his 50th City goal.
Even at this stage it seemed to be a case of how many City could add to the scoreline as Knockaert went close with a free-kick and Wasilewski landed a header on the roof of the net.

The second half saw a more subdued performance from City, but Ipswich couldn’t make any headway and the ceaseless running of Vardy never let their defence relax.
In a rare chance Schmeichel saved well from a well-struck Murphy shot.
Nigel Pearson then brought Mahrez on for Dyer, and then Wood on for Vardy, who left the field to a standing ovation from the larger than average crowd.
And it was Wood who got the goal he sorely needed with two minutes remaining, powering through the Ipswich defence after being nicely teed up by James.

Ten Man Leicester Rescue a Point at Forest

Nottingham Forest 2:2 Leicester City

1314 forest away b

A late penalty rescued a point for a ten-man Leicester side at the City Ground on Wednesday night…

An unchanged City side contested this East Midlands Derby against a Forest side with some injury problems, but it was the usual tight and tense affair between the two sides.
Fox forced a good save from Schmeichel early on, and then Morgan was gifted a ball from Darlow, but couldn’t find the space to get a shot in.
City then had a good spell but chances for Nugent and Dyer weren’t converted.
At the other end Schmeichel then tipped a solid header from Collins over the bar.
The breakthrough for City came in the 29th minute following a long ball out of defence from Morgan.
Lascelles and Darlow left the ball to each other and the keeper’s hurried punch went straight to Vardy who threaded a shot between two defenders and into the unguarded net.
Sadly, the travelling City fans only had ten minutes to lord it over their neighbours and Forest turned the game round before the break
A Reid corner delivered from the right was met with a thumping Paterson header from 16 yards that flew past Schmeichel.
Five minutes later, some hesitancy from Morgan in defence led to him tangling with Mackie. With Forest fans baying for a red card he was relieved to see only a yellow, before Reid sent Schmeichel the wrong way with a confident spot-kick.

City’s best chance of the second half came on the hour when Drinkwater set up Nugent with a good chance which he screwed wide.
Soon after this Konchesky was shown a straight red for a challenge on Mackie by the touchline, with the linesman perhaps going by crowd reaction as much as the challenge.
Moore came on for Dyer as ten man City had a hard job gaining possession for a while. Though after Phillips and Mahrez replaced Knockaert and Nugent with 20 minutes to go City began to get back into the game.

With eight minutes to go City persistence finally reaped rewards. A throw from Mahrez found Drinkwater in the area and he was knocked over by Paterson.
Although Phillips’ penalty was superbly saved by Darlow at full stretch to his right, the loose ball fell for James who squared for Mahrez to side-foot home from two yards.
City continued to push for a winner, but Drinkwater’s shot went inches the wrong side of the post after he was set up by the lively Mahrez.
It was a highly creditable point for ten-man City on a ground that seldom bears fruit, and saw an eight point lead at the top of the table.

Forest: Darlow, Collins, Reid (Djebbour 86), Mackie, Fox (Harding 78), Halford, Lascelles, Jara, Paterson, Majewski, Cox (Henderson 61). Subs Not Used: Greening, Derbyshire, De Vries, Abdoun.
Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan, Wasilewski, Konchesky, Knockaert (Mahrez 70), James, Drinkwater, Dyer (Moore 62), Vardy, Nugent (Phillips 70). Subs Not Used: Logan, Hammond, King, Wood.

Leicester winning run ends, but a point is rescued

Leicester City 2:2 Watford

1314 watford home c

City’s winning run came to an end at a wind-battered KPS on Saturday afternoon, but there was still an air of triumph due to Drinkwater’s injury time equaliser after Watford had led 2-0…

An unchanged City side attacked from the start, as usual, but in difficult conditions the league leaders found themselves a goal down by the 9th minute.
It was a strange goal to concede with Deeney launching a ball forward and  Forestieri timing his run perfectly to nip behind the City defence to divert the ball past Schmeichel with a diving header, while every blue shirt looked towards the linesman in vain.
City continued to press forward. Wasilewski went close; as did Vardy with a back-heel and James with a corner that was caught in the swirling wind.

But despite City’s dominance the Hornet’s stung again four minutes before the break when a low long-range shot from Murray sneaked in at Schmeichel’s right hand post.
City reduced the size of their task two minutes later when a slick move saw De Laet square a ball to James who finished well past Almunuia.

A frustrating second half followed as City struggled to create much on a pitch swirling with crisp packets and carrier bags, faced with the yellow wall doggedly defending their lead.
Watford were also dangerous on the break and Forestieri could have sealed matters with a shot before deciding on a pass to Deeney which went astray.

A good run and cross from the left from Dyer teed up Nugent close in, but he skewed his effort wide of the post.
Soon after this Pearson reshuffled his pack with Phillips and Mahrez replacing Vardy and Dyer.
Phillips almost got on to the score sheet, lurking at the far post as he had at Bournemouth, but Almunia managed to parry his shot over.
Wood replaced Wasilewski as City desperately threw everything forward, but 90 minutes came and went without them finding the net.

The five minutes of time added on were almost up when the ball sat up nicely on the edge of the area for Drinkwater to fire the perfect half volley beyond the reach of Almunia and into the net.
There was a huge roar around the KPS to greet this late, late equaliser.
Although City’s winning run had come to an end, this battling side had scraped a point, and proved that they never give up.

Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan, Wasilewski (Wood 84), Konchesky, Dyer (Mahrez 77), Drinkwater, James, Knockaert, Vardy (Phillips 74), Nugent. Subs Not Used: Hammond, King, Schlupp, Logan.
Watford: Almunia, Angella, Ekstrand, Battocchio (Merkel 90), Deeney, Forestieri (Hall 84), Murray, Faraoni (Pudil 71), Anya, Cassetti, Tozser. Subs Not Used: Bellerin, Doyley, Ranegie, Bond.

Referee: Martin Atkinson. Attendance: 23,635.

Leicester break more records at Bournemouth

AFC Bournemouth 0:1 Leicester City

Marcin Wasilweski shields the ball from Tokelo Rantie

City’s 1-0 win at Bournemouth on Saturday set new records for consecutive league wins (9), consecutive away wins (5) and oldest goalscorer with Kevin Phillips grabbing an 81st minute winner…

An unchanged City side weathered some early Cherries pressure, before efforts from Dyer and Nugent were blocked and Wasilewski’s header forced Camp into a decent save.
Camp denied Dyer again, before a superb save saw Vardy’s goal-bound effort tipped onto the bar.
At the other end Grabban tested Schmeichel with a long range shot, but the sides went in goalless at the break

1314 bourne away a

Kermorgant was one of two Bournemouth subs introduced for the second half, but for once he didn’t find the net against his former side.
The first chance fell to City but Knockaert sent a free-kick narrowly over the bar.
Grabban went close for the home side, before Camp saved again from a Knockaert header.
With twenty minutes remaining Nigel Pearson began to change things round, first bringing Phillips on for Nugent and then King for James and this paid dividends in the 81st minute.

Pile up celebration following Kevin Philips winning goal after 81 minutes

A Knockaert cross from the right fell perfectly for Phillips’ head at the far post, and the ball eluded Camp to land inches behind the line before it was cleared.
Phillips’ zimmer-frame celebration reflected the fact that he had just beaten Arthur Chandler’s oldest goal-scorer record set in 1934.

More importantly it left City 10 points clear of second placed QPR, and 13 ahead of third placed Burnley…
Bournemouth: Camp, Francis, Elphick, Ward, Harte, Fraser (Ritchie 46), Arter, O’Kane, Surman (Pitman 83), Rantie (Kermorgant 46), Grabban. Subs Not Used: Allsop, Cook, Smith, MacDonald.
Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan, Wasilewski, Konchesky, Knockaert, James (King 80), Drinkwater, Dyer, Nugent (Phillips 70), Vardy (Hammond 88). Subs Not Used: Schlupp, Logan, Mahrez, Wood.

Referee: D Drysdale. Attendance: 10,719.
