Silence of the Rams – 20th Anniversary of Leicester reaching the Premier League

Believe it or not, two decades have passed since Leicester City beat Derby County in the Play-Off Final at Wembley, reaching the Premier League for the first time…

“I think we were just physically stronger than them. They had some very good players: Kitson, Simpson, Tommy Johnson – I still see a lot of Tommy – and they had a great team. But they couldn’t deal with our physicality… lads like Jimmy Willis and Gary Coatsworth. Coatsworth looked like a mass murderer, he’d kick himself, never mind anyone else! I think the ball went out to Simpson very early on and Coats just absolutely buried him. They knew what was coming. And big Walshy went up there and caused havoc. On paper they had technically better players, but we were going out there desperate not to lose three in a row. There was also the pride involved with a Leicester v Derby game.
The first one, the Blackburn one, was a bit of a day out and an occasion. I’d never been there, Leicester hadn’t been there for years and it was all a bit ‘Hello Mum!’
Second time I was absolutely gutted.
The third time I really, really didn’t want to feel like that again, so you think to yourself, ‘Come on….’
It was most of the same lads in the side and we were really up for having another bash at it.”

Foxes pursue Seagull

Leicester City are apparently very keen to sign Brighton’s Argentinian striker Leonardo Ulloa, having had three bids turned down to date…

Leicester v Brighton, Sky Bet Championship, 8 April 2014,

Ulloa (right) scored 16 goals for the Seagulls  last season, including two in their 4-1 win at the KPS, but has three years left on his contract.
It is likely that City would have to break a club record outlay of £5.5M to land the big 6ft 3″ striker who moved to Sussex from Almería.
An alternative target for City appears to be former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner, but his wage demands would be big, and Hull are thought to be favorites to sign the Danish internamtional.

Matthew Upson signs for Leicester City

35 year old England international Matthew Upson will be a Leicester player as soon as his current contract with Brighton runs out on July 1…

The former Birmingham and West Ham centre-half will bring plenty of experience to City’s defence, in an area where the departures of Zak Whitbread and Sean St Ledger have left little cover.
He won the Brighton Player of the Season award last season in a side that took six points from City…

40 Years Ago Today – Franky Wortho’s Cowboy Kick for England

Four decades ago Leicester City’s Frank Worthington scored for England – an occasion so special that I was allowed to stay up late and watch it on Sportsnight, even though I had to be up for school…

wortho-cowboy-kick

England (who also had Frank’s City teammates Keith Weller and Peter Shilton in the line-up) drew 2-2 with Argentina at Wembley in the lead up to a World Cup tournament that sadly neither England, or Frank, would be gracing.

Kasper Schmeichel to sign four-year contract

Reports in the national newspapers and Leicester Mercury claim that City keeper Kasper Schmeichel has agreed to a new four-year contract despite interest from Arsenal and AC Milan…

Leicester City celebrations, Sky Bet Championship, 5 May 2014,

The Denmark international will join Gary Taylor-Fletcher in signing up to City’s Premier League campaign, along with David Nugent and Marcin Wasilewski. However, it seems likely that Lloyd Dyer will reject a new deal with a possible move to Watford on offer.
City are also looking to further strengthen the goalkeeping postion by signing Ben Hamer from Charlton Athletic.

Leicester owners prepared to spend big to join the elite

Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha told reporters in Bangkok that he is aiming to put City among the Premier League’s top five…

Leicester City celebrations, Sky Bet Championship, 5 May 2014,
BBC Sport quoted the City chairman as saying:  “It will take a huge amount of money, possibly 10bn Thai Baht (£180m), to get there. That doesn’t put us off. I am asking for three years, and we’ll be there. We won’t take the huge leap to challenge the league’s top five clubs immediately.
Do we have a chance to beat them? Yes, we have, but I think we need to establish our foothold in the league first and then we think about our next step. The important thing is we’re going with a belief that we can achieve, It’s important we continue to improve everything about ourselves. So, we can challenge for the top five. But, of course, one step at the time.”

This news broke the day after Nigel Pearson was named ‘Championship Manager of the Year’ at the League Managers Association’s Awards Dinner. It looks like he might have some serious money to spend before long.

Leicester finish off a triumphant season with a win

Leicester City 1:0 Doncaster Rovers

Leicester v Doncaster Rovers, Sky Bet Championship, 3 May 2014,

Leicester City lifted the Championship trophy in front of a sell-out crowd at the KPS, breaking the 100 point barrier with a 1-0 win over Doncaster, who were relegated by a late Birmingham goal.

In contrast to most City games this season there was a fairly calm start to the game, with City dominating possession but unable to get through a Rovers defence fighting for survival.
The first chance didn’t come until the 23rd minute when Mahrez cut in and sent a curling shot wide.
Four minutes later Nugent went clear on goal with a brilliantly timed run, but Johnstone managed to deny him with a fine block.

Leicester v Doncaster Rovers, Sky Bet Championship, 3 May 2014,
Rovers then had a rare foray forward but a good passing move ended when De Laet managed to deny Coppinger, while at the other end the Belgian sent a header just over the bar from a Mahrez cross, as the teams went in goalless at the break.

City continued to dominate proceedings in the second half: Drinkwater fired a shot over and Nugent was denied by a great save from Johnstone.
But the breakthrough finally came in the 75th minute when Husband tripped Mahrez in the area and Nugent fired home his 20th league goal of the season from the spot.

Leicester v Doncaster Rovers, Sky Bet Championship, 3 May 2014,

Although Keegan and Brown had chances for Rovers late on, a late equaliser for Birmingham at Bolton sent them down to League One.
Although a late chance for Mahrez was off-target a single goal was enough for victory, and a record breaking 102 points.

City received the League Championship trophy for the first time in their history, amid much fanfare and ticker tape, that was briefly threatened by a pitch invasion.
