Silence of the Rams – 20th Anniversary of Leicester reaching the Premier League

Believe it or not, two decades have passed since Leicester City beat Derby County in the Play-Off Final at Wembley, reaching the Premier League for the first time…

“I think we were just physically stronger than them. They had some very good players: Kitson, Simpson, Tommy Johnson – I still see a lot of Tommy – and they had a great team. But they couldn’t deal with our physicality… lads like Jimmy Willis and Gary Coatsworth. Coatsworth looked like a mass murderer, he’d kick himself, never mind anyone else! I think the ball went out to Simpson very early on and Coats just absolutely buried him. They knew what was coming. And big Walshy went up there and caused havoc. On paper they had technically better players, but we were going out there desperate not to lose three in a row. There was also the pride involved with a Leicester v Derby game.
The first one, the Blackburn one, was a bit of a day out and an occasion. I’d never been there, Leicester hadn’t been there for years and it was all a bit ‘Hello Mum!’
Second time I was absolutely gutted.
The third time I really, really didn’t want to feel like that again, so you think to yourself, ‘Come on….’
It was most of the same lads in the side and we were really up for having another bash at it.”
