Leicester beat QPR and close in on the title

Leicester City  1:0 Queens Park Rangers

Leicester v Queens Park Rangers, Sky Bet Championship, 19 April 2014,

City are one win away from the Championship title after a keenly contested 1-0 victory against QPR at the KPS on Saturday…

Nigel Pearson made two changes to his starting line-up with Knoackaert and King back in, and City got off to their customary attacking start, though Mahrez two early efforts were both blocked.
Knockaert sent a couple of chances skidding wide of the right hand post, before Schmeichel was tested by shots from Maiga and Kranjcar.
After that the game was becalmed for a long spell. apart from a hectic goalmouth scramble which saw Schmeichel deny Kranjcar before De Laet finally managed to clear.

Assou-Ekotto then escaped with a yellow for a lunge on Mahrez, before City’s best chance of the half just before the break.
Knoackaert and King seized on a Henry error in defence but the Welsh midfielder’s low angled drive was cleared off the line by  Onuoha.
Mahrez’s follow up shot flashed across the goal line.
In the last action of the half Kranjcar then opted to pass when well placed for a shot and the teams went in goalless.

The opening spell had few chances but some increasingly tasty challenges and Nigel Pearson decided to shuffle his pack in the 67th minute, Dyet and James coming on for Knockaert and Hammond.
City instantly went ahead after a great move down the right. Nugent, Mahrez and Drinkwater combined beautifully leading to Nugent bearing down on goal and firing a low shot past Green for his 21st goal of the season.
Moore then came on for the injured Schlupp, but QPR’s threat was diminished when Assou-Ekotto picked up a  second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on King.

Green saved well from Mahrez at the near post, and the French-Algerian also looked to have been tripped in the penalty area, but City didn;t need the second goal and victory put them within touching distance of the title.
Nigel Pearson observed: “It’s nice to be able to produce a season in which we have fulfilled our potential.”
