Bryan Hamilton Interview Extract…

bh

The Fox went down to deepest Suffolk to interview Bryan in his beautiful home a couple of weeks back. He has come a long way since his upbringing in the backstreets of Belfast.
His international career was played out against a backdrop of The Troubles, when Northern Ireland went into exile and ‘home’ games were played at Hull, Coventry, Anfield and Goodison. International football returned to WindsorPark in 1975 when Yugoslavia were brave enough to visit and Bryan scored the only goal of a highly emotional occasion.

“I played in a very good Northern Ireland side, look at the names: Jennings, Rice, Nelson, Hunter, O’Kane, O’Neill, McIlroy, Best, Dougan. I played alongside some fantastic players. It was very sad that we had all those problems but there was never any animosity among the players.”

Bryan’s time at Filbert Street saw him shackled by meagre resources. Contrast and compare with the numbers on the management and coaching side these days…

“There was myself, Dave Richardson and John McVey. That was it. John was the physio. Dave did the Youth Team and Reserves and I shared reserve team duties with him. And at one stage, when we went to QPR and beat them 1-0, we were sixth in the top flight!”

Sharing the work-load three ways led to some hectic scheduling: “I was desperate to sign a centre-forward and I had no money. I’d heard about  Gothenburg’s Jari Rantanen and I got a phonecall to say come and see him. They were playing some team in rural Sweden and I had to fly up there after taking training. I arrive up there with my suitcase, and the first flight back booked so I can take training the next day… and he wasn’t playing, he was injured. He wasn’t even in Sweden! Would that happen to Fergie?! I’d gone all the way up to the Arctic Circle for nothing.”

Bryan eventually got his man: “He was an unbelievable character and he was quite a decent player. He was 6ft 4” and we had to make special kit for him, but I think he had a good effect on the side.”
