Leicester undone by their ex-players at the Valley

Charlton Athletic 2:1 Leicester City

1314 charlton away

Nigel Pearson was left fuming by some referring decisions as City suffered their first defeat of the season at the Valley on Saturday afternoon…

There were half a dozen changes from the League Cup win at Carlisle with Schmeichel, Morgan, De Laet, King, James and Nugent returing to the side, but Miquel retaining his starting place in defence.
In a cagey opening only James booking for a foul on Pritchard was to be of any consequence.
City’s first chance came in the 22nd minute but Moore directed a diving header narrowly wide.
Charlton then took a 27th minute lead from a corner, although it looked as though Schmeichel had been impeded as he rose to punch a ball into his box. From Stephen’s flag-kick ex-Fox Morrision rose above the City defence to put the Addicks ahead.
Charlton then missed a golden chance to  go in at the break 2-0 up but Church wasted his chance from close in.

There were no changes at the break but it was a much livelier start to the second half. Kermorgant being denied by a smart save from Schmeichel at the near post, and then City were on the attack Vardy charging down the right and squaring for Drinkwater, but Hamer smothered the chance.
Then came the incident on which the game hinged. James was brought down for what looked like an obvious penalty which wasn’t given. His protests to referee Deadman didn’t appear to be too vociferous but they earned him a second yellow card and left City with a stiff task.
Nugent tested Hamer with a 25 yarder as an indignant City went on the attack, but then the home side doubled their lead in the 58th minute when another ex-City player, Kermorgant (inevitably), prodded a Jackson corner over the line.
Three minutes later City managed to pull a goal back, when a good run and cross from Vardy sat up well for Drinkwater to fire home from inside the area.
City were then kept in the game by a wonderful Schmeichel save from Kermorgant and then another from Cousins, but his heroics weren’t enough the earn the ten men a point.

City first defeat of the season had been engineered by ex-player Chris Powell, two old boys on the scoresheet and some refereeing decisions that Nigel Pearson said: “Beggared belief…”
