Wycombe Wanderers 1:2 Leicester City
A close encounter at Adams Park on Tuesday night saw City progress to the second round of the League Cup with a St Ledger winner deep into injury time…
Nigel Pearson made four changes to the side that won at Middlesbrough with Nugent, Danns, Dyer and Moore in for Vardy, Drinkwater, Konchesky and Whitbread and City got off to a comfortable start.
Not that they were easily visible in their new all-grey change strip against the setting sun.
The City fans, making up approximately half the 3,000 crowd were soon celebrating a 14th minute lead when Lewis tripped King in the area for an obvious penalty which Nugent planted firmly past Ingram.
That should have set City up for a comfortable evening but just seven minutes later Kuffour fired home a spectacular effort from the edge of the area to put the Chairboys back in the game.
It was an even contest up until the break when De Laet tested Ingram wityh a near post shot and Morgan nodded the resulting corner just over the bar.
Five minutes into the second half Knockaert came on for James and livened things up, putting Nugent through to tee up Danns for a shot which Ingrams tipped away at full stretch.
Dyer also forced a save from Ingram and then Wood delivered a tame shot after making space for himself well.
But extra-time loomed as 90 minutes were up on the clock after Schlupp had wasted an effort and Knockaert had a goal disallowed.
With seconds of the game left, and City fans facing a late night, up stepped Sean St Ledger to make amends for his own goal at Middlesbrough. A Knockaert corner was nodded down by Moore and blocked by Ingram, but the Irishman was in the right place to stab home the loose ball from close range.
City had not always been convincing in this first week of the new season, but you can’t argue with two victories.
