Leicester City 2:0 Burton Albion
City avoided any drama in their FA Cup 3rd round meeting with neighbours Burton Albion at the KPS on Saturday, a comfortable 2-0 win seeing them gain revenge for the League Cup exit earlier this season. From the third minute the result seemed in little doubt when new boy Wood notched his third goal in his second appearance.
A long ball forward from Konchesky was chested down by Wood and the big New Zealander got the better of two defenders and keeper Lyness to nudge the ball home with a perfect touch.
Weir sent a shot narrowly over the bar for the visitors before City all but sealed victory with a second goal in the 22nd minute.
Futacs made his way past three defenders before squaring to Dyer, who in turn teed up Da Laet for a finish from 15 yards.
Weir forced Schmeichel into a save with a full-blooded volley, while at the other end Futacs unluckily struck the woodwork from close in after getting on the end of a Marshall cross from the right.
Soon after the break the hard working Futacs fired a shot over from close-in after being set up by King.
Zola then pulled off an acrobatic over-head kick but it went straight at Schmeichel and the 1,400 travelling fans remained subdued.
City almost went three up when Keane saw his header cleared from under the bar by McGrath.
Knockaert, Nugent and Waghorn were introduced to the game, but it was already reduced to the tempo of a pre-season friendly and there were few chances. King’s delicately curled shot found the left hand post with Lyness beaten, but the promise of another goal-feast was long gone.
It was a professional job by City, who now wait to see who their opposition in the fourth round will be. It is just a shame that the FA Cup has lost its shine, being treated as half a game by the club when a decent gate of 14,463 should have been given the run of the whole ground.
