Winning Run Takes City to the Top

Leicester City 2:0 Bristol City

City extended their winning run to five games with a comfortable victory over Bristol City at the KPS on Saturday, and topped the Championship for a couple of hours…

City bossed this game from the start on an afternoon when Schmeichel had virtually nothing to do after comfortably blocking a Baldock header early on.
Knockaert just failed to reach a Dyer cross before Robins’ keeper Heaton had to make saves from Nugent and Dyer.
City should have gone ahead in the 19th minute when Knockaert delivered a delightful chip onto the head of Nugent but his hurried effort cleared the bar.
The striker made amends instantly when he ran on to a Vardy through ball and shrugged off the challenge of Nyatanga before slotting a cool finish past Heaton.
City continued to dominate proceedings, but chances were rare up to the break with Nugent firing a good chance straight at Heaton.

The second half saw De Laet replacing Konchesky, who was suffering an illness, and then an exhausted looking Vardy soon made way for Marshall.
City, with Drinkwater and Knockaert buzzing around midfield,  pursued the goal that would ensure the points. King and Knockaert both threatened, before City finally extended their lead with sixteen minutes remaining.
Drinkwater sent King in down the right and his cross to the far post was finished off with a fine diving header own goal from from the unfortunate Foster, under pressure from Nugent.
The result was beyond doubt and City knocked it around for the remainder of the game, Knockaert producing a fine save from Heaton.
The only sour note was a hamstring injury for St Ledger, with City short on defenders.
City stayed on top of the Championship until Cardiff’s win over Ipswich in the evening, and they can be well satisfied with their start to the season.
Nigel Pearson summed it up: “I know this is a tough, competitive league so there will be tough times ahead, but I have every confidence in the group of players and support staff because they all work exceptionally hard.”
