City Draw at Doncaster

Doncaster Rovers 1:1 Leicester City

City’s final away match of the season saw a tame 1-1 draw at Doncaster, with the mathematics ensuring a repeat of this fixture next season….

Rovers needed a point to ensure survival (or didn’t, as things turned out) while City’s play-off hopes were already extinguished.  That didn’t stop 2,300 City fans making the journey, however.

City enjoyed a bright start, Vassell having one effort ruled out by a linesman’s flag and Gallagher unable to hit the target when well-placed.
Former Doncaster midfielder Wellens then created two chances but Yakubu and King were both blocked by the home defence.
Coppinger and Mason both went close as Rovers picked up towards the break, but the sides went in goalless at the break.
That deadlock only lasted for five minutes into the second half. Brooker, a half time substitute, took full advantage of a loose ball that sat up for him 25 yards out, firing a half-volley beyond the reach of Weale.
City introduced a sub of their own, bringing Kamara on for Gallagher, but he couldn’t pull off a similar trick, wasting a good effort after good work from Wellens.
It was another sub, Howard on for Abe, who set up City’s 76th minute equaliser. A good run from Vassell down the right present Howard with the ball on the edge of the area and he slipped a clever pass through for Yakubu to stab the ball past Sullivan.
Mason forced a good save from Weale, with Rovers still needing the point at this stage, until news of Barnsley’s equaliser at Sheffield United relieved the tension among the home supporters.
The game petered out to a 1-1 draw, Donny delighted to be staying in the Championship, City less so.

Sven was looking forward: “Now we have to produce a big performance at home against Ipswich Town in front of our fans and then we have to start to think about next season, learn from this season and the little mistakes we have been doing, and try to do it better next season.”
