FOX: You won a huge number of cup ties during that time and got through to the Final of the League Cup in 1964 and 1965. There was no Wembley final for what was quite a young competition then, how was it regarded?

GB: We wanted to win it, and so did every other club. There was no putting the reserves out and stuff like that. That was my first winners’ medal when we beat Stoke over two legs and winning it was a great feeling.
We were winning games, growing in confidence and becoming better players.

FOX: It was around this time that you got your first England call up. Can you remember how you found out about it?

GB: I was down at the ground. We had this little room with a snooker table in it which we met up in once we had finished training. We were having a game of snooker when Matt Gillies came in.
He came up to me, shook me by the hand and said: “Congratulations, you’re in the England team.”
I couldn’t quite believe it and I thought how does he know that when the squad haven’t even assembled yet? Obviously Alf Ramsey must have said something to him. It came as something of a shock to me but also it was a great delight, obviously.
I remember feeling very, very proud.

FOX: Leicester City… is it a family thing?

TM: Yes, I started going down with my old man when I was about 9 years old, so yes it’s a family thing. My first game was Port Vale at home, I think we won 4-0. It was the ZDS or something so there were only about 5,000 there. Shocking!
We used to go in the old Members Stand, me and the old man, we used to sit in the middle bit because we knew Richard Smith and some of the other players. We used to go in the Player’s Lounge afterwards. The old man used to give the doorman a bottle of whiskey once a year and that was enough for us to get the nod through every game! It was a little old place that Player’s Lounge, there would be Steve Walsh in there, and all the player’s wives crammed in. We’d have some good nights in there.
