City Extend Royal’s Misery

Reading o:1 Leicester City

Reading failed to convert their chances and paid the price as a Waghorn header earned three points for City at the Madejski Stadium on Monday night…

Nigel Pearson brought last week’s matchwinner Paul Gallagher in for Lloyd Dyer, while Martyn Waghorn made his first start, taking Steve Howard’s place up front.
The opening 20 minutes saw an even contest, although Reading gradually took control of the run of play and had the better chances to score… Rasiak’s low shot on the turn went two inches wide; McAnuff cut in from the right and fired a shot against the inside of the left hand post; and Weale pulled off a fine save to deny Church.
Gallagher managed to brush the top of the net with a speculative shot from distance but there were few chances for City until late in the half.
However, in the last minute of the first half City hit back with a sucker punch that floored the luckless Royals. Waghorn got a glancing header to Oakley’s flag kick and found the net to the delight of those City fans who had travelled to Berkshire rather than watching on the tv.
Seconds later Fryatt missed a chance to double the lead, hitting the ball against  Federici after Wellens sent im through in a one on one with the keeper.
Early in the second half Fryatt found himself in an almost identical situation but fired his shot straight at Federici again.
The lively McAnuff continued to cause problems but City’s back line held firm. One cross flew across the goal but no one was on hand to convert it and Long also went close.
On the hour Howard replaced Fryatt and Campbell replaced Waghorn, but they saw little action with Reading pushing forward, desperate to get something from the game.
City did a professional job however and it was the visitors who dominated in the dying minutes of the game with Campbell going close at the near post and Howard firing a shot inches wide of the left hand post.
The final whistle saw City up to fifth place, just three points behind leaders Newcastle.
