City Pay the Penalty at Leeds

Leeds United 1:0 Leicester City

City failed to match their recent standards for this trip to Elland Road, with Leeds early penalty clinching the points…

Leeds scored their winner with just three minutes on the clock, with a minute’s applause for Gary Speed still ringing in the ears.
Schlupp, who has done a good job standing in at left back, showed a bit of inexperience in the role mis-timing a challenge on  Byram.
Becchio beat Schmeichel from the spot and a team with one win in eight games now had their tails up.
In the 13th minute De Laet went on one of his trademark charges forward, drawing a save from Kenny.
At the other end Schmeichel saved from Green before Waghorn went very close with a volley from a Marshall cross, and Vardy was also off target, but it was Leeds’ half, with the home side chasing down hard and never allowing City to settle into their passing game.
The second half saw City looking more settled and Waghorn’s cross for Morgan forced Kenny into a save.
In the 57th minute Knockaert and Futacs came on for Marshall and Vardy.
Waghorn and Futacs both went close but chances were rare and City were unable to build any meaningful pressure on a home side desperate for victory.

Nigel Pearson admitted: “We didn’t perform particularly well tonight and when we don’t manage the ball effectively it changes the complexion of games. We underachieved tonight.”

Leeds: Kenny, Byram, Lees, Tate, Peltier, Green, Tonge, Norris, Thomas (Brown 61), Diouf, Becchio.
Unused Subs: Ashdown, Drury, White, Gray, Hall, McCormack.
Leicester: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan, Whitbread, Schlupp, Marshall (Knockaert 57), Drinkwater, King, Dyer, Vardy (Futacs 57), Waghorn (Lingard 77). Unused Subs: Logan, Konchesky, James, Moore.

Referee: Mick Russell (Hertfordshire). Attendance: 17,717.

Extract from the Davie Gibson interview…

FOX: Do you keep in touch with any of your old City team mates?

DG: The only one I see regularly is Frank McLintock. I see Stringy when I go up to games.
Frank was the big brother I never had. If anyone kicked me, they only kicked me once because Frank looked after me.
I remember one Thursday lunchtime over a pint Frank tried to talk me into a game of golf, even though it was against club rules in the days leading up to a game.
“Matt would go mad.” I said. “Yes, but he won’t know will he?” says Frank.
He talked me round and we were striding down the long 15th at Rothley Park when we caught sight of Matt Gillies.
We both dived into the bushes on the railway embankment and were covered in scratches from the brambles.
We laid low for a while until he was out of sight. ‘Do you think he saw us?’ I asked Frank. ‘Well we could see him, so its possible.’ he said.
We sweated it out for a couple of days and nothing was said in training.
We played at Anfield on the Saturday and we were both in the team so we said to each other in the changing rooms before the game: ‘He didn’t see us, we got away with it.’
We beat Liverpool and Matt was delighted after the game, he went round every player looking them in the eye and saying: ‘Well played.’ Then he came to us two and said; ‘…And you pair were fantastic… perhaps you should play golf every Thursday?’
