Farewell to Jack Hobbs

Jack Hobbs completed a permanent move to Nigel Pearson’s Hull City this morning…

Hobbs, still only 22, moved to Humberside for an undisclosed fee following a 13 game loan spell last season.
This time last year Hobbs won The FOX Subscribers Player of the Season by a landslide… readers comments read: “Future City Legend… Pearson’s best signing… Ready for the Premier League… Liverpool’s loss, our gain… Incomprehensible that he wasn’t in the team of the year… I only hope that we can hang on to him… Hardly put a foot wrong… A class above the rest… Future Captain… Can’t believe how he has matured this season… Another Elliott?… Hardy an error all year… Exceptional maturity in a demanding position… Future England player… Immense… Solid and reliable… very classy.”

A year on, he is surplus to requirements having struggled to adapt to Paulo Sousa’s playing style and then losing his place under Sven Goran Eriksson.
We thought he would be a long-term City captain and Leicester legend… perhaps our new benchmark is higher than that.
Best of luck in the future Jack…

A replacement centre-half could soon be on his way, with Preston North End apparently accepting an offer from City for their Irish international Sean St Ledger.

City Swoop for Danns and Schmeichel

City signed their second scouser of the summer, with Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns arriving on a free transfer.

Danns, who impressed in both City’s performances against Palace last season, moved to Selhurst Park from Birmingham in 2008. Before that he failed to make the grade at his first club, Blackburn, but made his name with some fine perfomances with Colchester.
Palace fans claim that we will appreciate his work ethic, and they are sorry to lose him.

Leeds United have reported that Danish goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel has now completed his move to Leicester, signing a three year contract this afternoon.

Peltier Signs From Terriers

City have completed the signing of 24 year old right back Lee Peltier from Huddersfield Town for what is believed to be an initial £750,000 deal…

Liverpool-born Peltier, who played for Yeovil before signing for Town two years ago and will be reunited with his former coach  Derek Fazackerley, has signed a three year deal.
Terriers boss Lee Clark commented: “He has been fantastic for me and I think he is a Premier League footballer in the making. When players perform well opportunities will open up for them and I understand that he wants to play at the highest possible level.”

Meanwhile it seems that the game of brinkmanship continues at Elland Road with Kasper Schmeichel issuing this statement: “At the end of the season Leeds United and I both made a commitment to honour the last year of my contract and try to win promotion. Therefore it is with great disappointment that I have learned that Leeds have accepted an offer from Leicester.”
Not quite the usual ‘I’m delighted to be here’ and some considerable doubt must now be cast on his proposed move to Leicester.

Leeds Accept Offer For Schmeichel

City may have made a top priority signing with Leeds United accepting an undisclosed offer for their goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel believed to be in th eregion of £1.5M…

Leeds boss Simon Grayson told the BBC: “We feel this is the right deal for the club. We spoke to Kasper’s agent at the end of the season about a contract extension and it was apparent that it was going to be difficult.”
Schmeichel, son of Manchester United and Denmark legend Peter, spent five years at Manchester City and a season at Notts County before his move to Elland Road.
This is Sven’s first signing of the summer, with hopefully plenty more to follow.

The Last Time City Drew Rotherham in the League Cup it was also in the first round…

at the beginning of the 1979-80 season.
The Millers won both legs of the tie… 2-1 at Filbert Street despite a debut goal from Alan Young; and 3-0 at Millmoor with former City favourite Rodney Fern scoring twice.
Things were to get better for Jock Wallace’s side as they went on to win the Second Division Championship…
just saying like.

20 Years of The Fox Summer Special…

It is now twenty years since the first FOX Summer Special was published… and we were all celebrating ‘The Great Escape’…

In the intervening two decades it is fair to say that there have been a few ups and downs following City, and our summer issue has reflected on: Wembley play-off defeats and victories, new managers, a ground move, relegation from the Premiership, relegation from the Championship, promotion from the second and third tiers, League Cup triumphs and qualification for Europe, internal strife, financial meltdowns…. it has never been dull.

To celebrate our 20th Anniversary we invite you to send in your Summer Special memories, which will feature in this year’s issue.
Micky Bates wrote: “I remember that front page of the Summer Special ‘If you all hate Speedie clap your hands’ by Colin Hill. After that defeat to Blackburn I was distraught for months so I enlarged it and stuck it in the back window of my XR3 and went on Holiday to Padstow, Didn’t my missus laugh!!”

Sven Weighs Up Keeper Options

Unfortunately the deteriorating form of Chris Weale last season has made the signing of a goalkeeper a priority for Sven Goran Eriksson…

Eriksson’s first attempt at replacing Weale did not work out, with some decidedly shaky performances from Portugese international Ricardo, and it appears that the City boss is now persuing several lines of enquiry to get a new man between the posts.
Egyptian international Hassam El-Hanary has been linked with City, supposedly the best keeper Africa has ever produced, his nickname is ‘the High Dam’, but he is 38 years old.
Three years younger than that is Manchester City keeper Shay Given, who is looking for a move after losing his first team place to Joe Hart. Celtic are favourites to sign the Republic of Ireland international but a move to Leicester is still a possibility, though described as a ‘long shot’ by an Eastlands insider.
Ironically, discarded keeper Conrad Logan has earned rave reviews from a successful stint on loan at Bristol Rovers this season. Teammate Danny Coles said: “Conrad has been outstanding. I’d say he is probably the best goalkeeper I’ve ever worked with. It’s not only about the saves he makes on the pitch; it’s his all-round presence about the place. He’s a fantastic man to have in the changing room and a real character. The more important thing for us is that his football ability is second to none. He’s been our best player since he arrived and all credit to him for that.”
Rovers fans are now desperate to see Logan sign a permanent deal at the Memorial Ground, while City’s search for a keeper goes on…
